About

I am Marco Niemeijer, born July 28, 1970 in the Netherlands. I studied at the fine arts and audio-visual departement of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. At the Rietveld I worked with film and film installations, but was also interested in photography, writing and music. After graduating at the audio visual department in 1998, I started writing songs and performing as a singer-songwriter, eventually having my own band. Between 2000 and 2006 we recorded several cd’s with my songs. At the same time I became interested in cooking. Feeling the need to spend some time away from the world of art, working creatively but with my hands, I started working as a chef. In 2008 I founded a French bakery in the heart of Amsterdam with my younger brother, designing our own interior and furniture.

As a visual artist, formal decisions are at the heart of my work. Within that, physical, visual or narrative limitations are a starting point for me to focus. I use documentary narrative elements and events that imperceptibly draw the viewer into a sense of slowing down or coming to a standstill. I consider both to be another form of movement. When we approach such a state, a different experience of the dimensions of a space or a certain event arises. In my films I explore the meaning and value of these spaces we are in, and the different ways we relate to it.
